Joining forces with singer and rapper Sara Fajira, Weird Genius have released their smash hit ‘Lathi’.
Formed in 2016 by Reza Oktovian, Eka Gustiwana and Gerald Liu, the signature blend of pumping bass and traditional Javanese sonic elements has made the trio who they are today. The EDM supergroup has continued to grow their fanbase over the years, earning them spots on the lineups of coveted shows and festivals, such as YouTube’s 2017 Viral Fest in Bangkok and supporting The Chainsmokers in 2018.
Shortly after their performance at the Indonesian Billboard Music Awards show this year, the global pandemic forced them to cancel their highly-anticipated Asia tour. While the dancefloors unfortunately remained empty, the meteoric rise of their club-focused track ‘Lathi’ on the charts has proven the trio to be unstoppable.
Since its release in February, ‘Lathi’ has quickly risen to the top of the charts in Indonesia as well as garnered YouTube views surpassing 40 million.
On TikTok, the song has sparked the #LathiChallenge, inspired by their haunting music video, which saw countless content creators across Asia participating. The hashtag has now racked up over 170 million views and counting.
The song has shot to #1 on every major streaming platform in Indonesia – Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, TikTok, Resso, Joox and iTunes.
It entered Spotify Viral Charts, peaking at #2 on Global, #1 in Malaysia, and charting similarly in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. It has also reached the #1 spot on Spotify Indonesia’s Top 50 Chart for over two weeks, outperforming megastars such as Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and Melanie Martinez.
With a sound that reminds you of a slightly EDM Evanescence and music that pulls you in at the first beat, it is no surprise how popular the group is in Asia, and how the appeal of its hauntingly creative music video has caught on, and inspired a wave on Tik Tok.
As of today, ‘Lathi’ is still growing strong on the Top 50 Charts in Singapore.
