The Weeknd steals the spotlight from Justin Bieber this past Sunday night, taking homw trophies from five different categories at Canada’s Juno Awards 2016.
The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye, won best single of the year for “Can’t Feel My Face,” as well as Album of the Year honour for Beauty Behind the Madness. The R&B prince also earned three other Junos during the pre-telecast prize-giving on Saturday night — Artist of the Year, Best Songwriter and Best R&B/Soul Recording, again for his Beauty Behind the Madness album.
The Toronto native surpassed other Canadian-born superstars, including Drake, Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes and City and Colour for the titles.
The Weeknd also recently placed three top slots on Billboard‘s Hot R&B Songs chart.
Meanwhile, Bieber, who was awarded Juno Fan Choice Award, hadn’t had as good of a year, receiving “boos” from his Canadian fans after failing to show up to receive his award in Calgary. The 22-year-old decided to solve his awkward disappearance by accepting his award through a video.
The booing, however, is not new to the Biebs. Funnily enough, at the 2014 Juno Awards he was also booed at after failing to show up to receive his – wait for it – Fan Choice Award.
According to Bieber, his unfortunate absence this year was due to his performance at the iHeartRadio Music Awards in Los Angeles
