Coldplay’s Will Champion revealed the band once submitted a song to the David Bowie only to be asked a resounding question: “It’s not a very good song, is it?”
The drummer explained in detail how the rejection happened: “[the song] had this three-part thing that had a sort of David Bowie-type character, and I think Chris wrote him a letter saying ‘Please will you sing on it?’ and he came back and said: ‘It’s not a very good song is it?’
Chris Martin also shareed the story in the video tribute to the late rock star showed at the BBC Music Awards earlier this month, recalling: “He called me and said, ‘It’s not one of your best’. He’s got very high standards and I appreciate that. It inspires the rest of us to keep our standards high.”
The frontman added that after Bowie had dropped his first single “Where Are We Now?” off his 2013 album The Next Day, he felt somewhat staggered and vexed, all due to Bowie’s sheer dexterity. Martin recalled thinking, “Like, ‘Come on, it’s not fair.’ He’s already got all these amazing songs and then this instant classic.”
David Bowie was the man who wouldn’t hesitate to say what he thought about the music he wanted to create. The late British rocker had worked with many household names like John Lennon, Mick Jagger and Arcade Fire. Even though he’d already achieved the iconic status in music but he was always willing to learn new things. He got an eclectic taste in music and even took inspiration from rapper Kendrick Lamar on his final album.
