Hozier released “Cherry Wine” music video, starring Oscar-nominated actress Saoirse Ronan, to raise domestic violence awareness.
Premiering today (Feb 14), Hozier’s powerful music video sees the Brooklyn star portraying a woman dealing with an abusive relationship with onscreen partner, played by Moe Dunford (Vikings, Games of Thrones). The video is directed by Emmy-winning director Dearbhla Walsh.
All iTunes download proceeds from “Cherry Wine” will go to domestic abuse charities in 23 countries across Europe, North and South America, and Australia.
Speaking of his decision to lead this charity campaign with the song, Hozier said, “Domestic violence is an ongoing issue in our society, the statistics of which are shocking and the effects of which damage whole families, communities and span generations. With the song ‘Cherry Wine’, I tried to get across the difficulty of coming to terms with and facing up to domestic violence and the dynamic of an abusive relationship.”
Although the video highlights domestic violence against women, the song is written from the perspective of a male persona stuck in the vicious cycle of “justification”. The implication is clear: regardless of the sex of the sufferer, the issue of domestic abuse needs to be dealt with.

But he’s also looking forward to taking this time to get back in the studio: “When I think about the next album and I think about making new music, I get very excited. So I can’t wait.”
Hozier has sold 1.9 million plus albums and over 10 million singles worldwide. His self-titled debut has achieved multi-platinum status in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Russia and many countries across Europe.
