If you’re on the lookout for your next favorite track, Japanese-British singer and producer Miso Extra has just the thing. She’s back with “POP”, a hyperpop gem that perfectly captures that giddy, heart-racing feeling of first infatuation. Released today, this sugary hit gives us a glimpse into her upcoming debut album, Earcandy, set to drop on May 16th via Transgressive.
Produced alongside members of indie-pop collective MICHELLE, “POP” is all about vibrant energy. It’s a whirlwind mix of K-pop and UK garage, and Miso Extra effortlessly blends English and Japanese lyrics to create a sound that’s entirely her own. With a burst of joy and catchy hooks, it’s like a sonic sugar rush — but without the crash.
Miso herself describes it as a track inspired by that overwhelming feeling of seeing something so cute you just have to squeeze it. “POP is about the feeling of finding something SO cute you want to squeeze it till it pops!” she says. “It’s a sugar-fueled journey into the pop genre, inspired by artists like NewJeans and CHAI.”
“POP” follows a string of hits from Miso Extra, including the synth-house-inspired “Certified”, the pop-R&B bop “Ghostly”, and “Slow Down”, a euphoric UKG track co-created with DJ Boring. Not to mention her Metronomy collab “Good Kisses”, which had Joseph Mount declaring Miso Extra as “the future.”
For Earcandy, Miso teamed up with Grammy-winning engineer Ricky Damian (who’s worked with the likes of Ezra Collective and Jorja Smith) at Damon Albarn’s Studio 13. Expect a genre-blending journey packed with collaborations, including contributions from A.K. Paul and Tyson. Every track offers a bit of sweetness, while deeper themes of growth, vulnerability, and self-empowerment shine through.
Miso Extra is hitting the road this June, bringing her bold sound to fans across Europe. If you’re lucky enough to be near one of these cities, mark your calendar!
- June 4 — Hasard Ludique, Paris
- June 5 — Kantine am Berghain, Berlin
- June 18 — Doka, Amsterdam
- June 19 — Village Underground, London
Miso Extra’s journey is as inspiring as her music. Growing up in Japan with a Japanese mother and British father, she didn’t see many artists who looked like her in the industry. But instead of letting that hold her back, she created her own space. During the UK’s lockdown in 2020, Miso Extra was born — a musical persona that turns past experiences into empowerment. Even her name is a clever flip on the offensive stereotypes she faced, reclaiming the phrase “me so extra” with pride.
From anime-inspired aesthetics to eclectic musical influences like J Dilla, MF DOOM, and Kelis, Miso Extra’s Misoverse is a bold reflection of her identity — full of colorful stories, powerful messages, and pure creativity.
So, if you’re ready to experience a track that makes your heart race and your feet move, give “POP” a listen. And don’t forget to keep an ear out for Earcandy on May 16th. This is just the beginning of Miso Extra’s musical takeover.
