Sunflower Bean’s third studio album, Headful of Sugar, comes out on May 6 via Mom + Pop. The New York-based trio have shared the MV for lead single, ‘Who Put You Up To This?’
Following their third EP, 2019’s Kings of the Dudes, Sunflower Bean have announced their long-awaited third LP – Headful of Sugar – out on May 6.
The record will see the band navigating “the agony and ecstasy of contemporary American life.”
Headful of Sugar is an album that seeks to answer the question, “What do we lose as individuals if we have no faith in the future?” And, conversely, the band finds resolution instead with, “What might we gain?”
Vocalist and bassist Julia Cumming says,
“Tomorrow is not promised, no tour is promised, no popularity is promised, no health or money is promised. Why not make what you want to make on your own terms? Why not make a record that makes you want to dance? Why not make a record that makes you want to scream?”
Guitarist Nick Kivlen adds,
“We wanted to write about the lived experience of late capitalism, how it feels everyday, the mundanity of not knowing where every construct is supposed to ultimately lead you. The message is in the title: this is about fast pleasures, the sugar of life, the joy that comes with letting go of everything you thought mattered.”
The trio also shared the music video of the album’s lead single ‘Who Put You Up To This?’
The band comments,
“Are you satisfied? Who put you up to do things that you do? Was it your own choice? Questioning your life is the first step to taking the agency to change it. Sometimes you have to let go of who you have been so that you can become who you want to be.”
Sunflower Bean’s sophomore album, 2018’s Twentytwo in Blue, was a self-described “ode to the fleeting innocence of youth.” The album charted in the UK Top 40.
The record was followed up with 2019’s Kings of the Dudes, which featured their massive hit ‘Come For Me’.
