NYC-based producer Yaeji and Seoul-based indie band HYUKOH frontman OHHYUK has released two new single and music videos – ’29’ and ‘Year to Year’ via XL Recordings.
Yaeji, in collaboration with OHHYUK, have released two new songs titled ’29’ and ‘Year to Year’.
Written, recorded and produced by the two artists, the music video for ‘Year to Year’ was directed by longtime collaborator DQM whereas ’29’ was directed by dada.service creative Nam Eunuk.
’29’ features Yaeji’s signature rapping style paired with OHHYUK’s alternative indie-influenced drums and Bossa guitar.
‘Year to Year’ takes on a more indie cinematic approach coupled with a drum ‘n’ bass-inspired breakdown.
Yaeji comments on the collaboration,
โWhen I was feeling a bit stuck and stagnant with music, Hyuk helped me find the joys of creating again, and this was my first time collaborating with someone so closely on music. We spent many days together in the studio in Seoul, sometimes not even making music but just chatting about how we grew up and sharing meals together, and our musical collaboration blossomed as our friendship grew.โ
OHHYUK adds,
โYaeji and I first started to jam when Yaeji visited Seoul last summer. At that time, I was experiencing a kind of โmusicianโs blockโ and the jams with Yaeji acted as a catalyst for me and brought back the joy of working on music again. Through the jams we made many tracks, Yaeji soon began to plan the framework for โYear to Yearโ and I did the same for โ29.โ For the videos, we worked with Directors DQM and Nam Eunuk, who are both close friends of ours. It was the love and support of many friends that made the music videos come to life. I would like to send my undivided appreciation to them.โ
The two musicians first began working together in April for a special visual episode of Yaeji’s monthly NTS radio show ‘Kraeji w/Yaeji’.
Within the same month, Yaeji also celebrated the one-year anniversary of her mixtape projectย WHAT WE DREW.
This year, the producer performed in multiple headlining shows including BRICโs Celebrate Brooklyn!, Pitchfork Music Festival and Life is Beautiful Festival.
She has also worked with Dua Lipa on a remix for the global hit ‘Don’t Start Now’ as well as participating in a livestream performance as part of Lipa’s #trulyinspired series.
OHHYUK is the lead singer and guitarist of the Korean indie band HYUKOH. He has performed at various festivals including Coachella, Fuji Rock Festival, Lowlands, Pukkelpop , and OYA Festival.
An icon in youth culture, OHHYUK was invited to the CELINE show at Paris Fashion Week and the Hong Kong Birkenstock x Rick Owens show. He has also appeared as a cover model for Esquire, Arena, GQ, and Dazed.
