After being delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Norwegian indie pop singer releases her highly-anticipated debut record, ‘if i could make it go quiet’.
Released independently via AWAL, girl in red’s first LP continues the musician’s blend of bedroom pop and indie rock that was previously established in her EPs, Chapter 1 (2018) and Chapter 2 (2019).
The Norwegian singer describes the record as an emotional recap to 2020, exploring her personal metal health experiences as well as “the different sides of love”.
She says of the album,
“‘if i could make it go quiet’ is an attempt to learn what it’s like to be human; to deal with the scariest parts of myself; to live with the pain of knowing i’m only flesh and bones; to be angry, broken and unforgiving yet still able to wear my heart on my sleeve; i’m shedding light on the darkest parts of my mind and i’m letting everyone in; if i could make it go quiet is me simply trying to understand what the fuck is going on.”
Earlier this month, prior to the release of the album, girl in red dropped the final single, ‘You Stupid Bitch’.
Inspired by a complicated friendship, she says,
“There’s this line from this movie I love, The Perks of Being a Wallflower that goes ‘we accept the love we think we deserve.’ It’s a very heartbreaking line, but it’s really what I was experiencing in this situation, where I was always there for this person who would get their heart broken, and I would just come running. I would drop everything just to be there for them. That person would never see me as anything else than just a friend, even though I feel like I could’ve made her so happy… The core essence of this track is like, I’m obviously here for you, and I want to be with you, but you keep messing around with other people, and you keep getting broken. It’s this really direct, straightforward track.”
It is the song that the Forbes Under 30 in Europe star is most excited to play live on her upcoming sold-out European Tour in May of next year (2022).
She declares,
“When live shows are back, I don’t think I’m going to make it out of that mosh pit alive! It’s gonna be crazy!”
‘You Stupid Bitch’ follows the singles, ‘midnight love’, ‘Rue’ and ‘Serotonin’.
girl in red first gained prominence with her 2018 breakthrough single ‘i wanna be your girlfriend’ which became one of The New York Times’ top 10 tracks of that year.
Hailed as an icon for the new generation of indie music fans, the burgeoning singer has racked up more than a billion streams with her indie pop anthems.
